Domaine de Chevalier produces one of Bordeaux's most coveted white wines from their gravelly plateau in Pessac-Léognan. Among the most compelling in all Bordeaux.
The vineyards lie on deep Günzian gravel beds mixed with sand and clay, typical of the best Graves sites. This well-draining soil forces the vines to develop deep root systems, contributing to the wine's mineral complexity and natural acidity. The maritime influence from the nearby Atlantic moderates temperatures, ensuring slow, even ripening that preserves freshness whilst developing flavour concentration.
Pessac-Léognan was carved out from the broader Graves appellation in 1987 to recognise its superior terroir and quality. Home to all the classified growth estates of Graves, including Haut-Brion, the appellation mandates strict yields and quality controls. The region excels with both red and white wines, with the whites showing particular elegance and longevity thanks to the gravelly soils and skilled use of oak ageing.
The 2025 Bordeaux vintage emerged from one of the most demanding growing seasons in recent memory — the earliest budbreak since 1989, June temperatures second only to 2003 since records began, and an unusually early harvest beginning in August for the whites. Conditions that should have produced heavy, overripe wines. They didn't. Decanter's Georgie Hindle, who tasted close to 200 wines ahead of the formal campaign, describes "exceptional concentration, aromatic purity and a freshness that contradicts the record-breaking heat.
The early critical consensus places 2025 stylistically between the precision of 2020 and the structure of 2016, with the brightness of 2023 — a combination that suggests a very serious vintage indeed. Yields are dramatically low, the smallest crop since 1991, with production across the Gironde running around 15% below the five-year average. The quality is here. There simply isn't very much of it.
What the critics say:
"A tight and powerful wine with a precise and structured texture. Restrained, steely and racy. Goes on for minutes. So much intensity. A bright and shining white. Stunning balance. Alcohol 13.5%. A blend of 70% sauvignon blanc and 30% semillon."
"The 2025 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc gets my vote for the white wine of the vintage. Rich and powerful in the glass, but also beautifully vibrant, the 2025 dazzles from start to finish. Lemon confit, pear, slate, mint, white flowers and tangerine peel are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop over time. The 2025 is quite simply stunning. Don’t miss it!"
"The cooler microclimate at this estate favours hot and dry weather, and this proved no exception in 2025. I tasted this wine no less than five times at different locations (négociant Joanne, CVGB, Pessac–Léognan group tasting, at the estate, too), always enjoying the exciting combination of freshness and white stone fruit fleshiness expressed in a suave palate texture with nuance and refinement, evoking Meursault–like depth and opulence. 'We picked later, including after the rains of late August, to get more breadth in the palate,' remarked owner Olivier Bernard. That – and a long finish. A great success!"
