There are few names in the Loire that inspire quite the same reverence as Clos Rougeard. Whisper it among sommeliers and collectors, and you'll usually be met with a knowing nod—and for good reason. This is one of France’s most legendary domaines, producing Cabernet Franc with a clarity, finesse, and quiet power that has set a benchmark not just for Saumur-Champigny, but for red wine full stop.

Their Le Bourg 2017 is Clos Rougeard in full voice. From a tiny, prized plot of old vines on limestone-rich soils just next to the cellar, Le Bourg is the crown jewel of the estate’s three red cuvées. It’s the most structured, the most age-worthy, and - while always refined - the most brooding in its youth. In 2017, a vintage marked by balance and purity, Le Bourg delivers a stunning mix of lifted red and black fruit, graphite, tobacco, and that signature mineral thread that runs through all Rougeard wines. A true gem from the Club cellar.

What the critics say:

97/100Yohan Castaing, Decanter

"This barrel sample expresses liquorice, vanilla and dark fruits, but there's also a Burgundian undercurrent of Morello cherry that comes to the fore. Finely-etched tannins provide the foundation for this outstanding 2017."

18/20James Lawther MW, Jancis Robinson

"Dense crimson hue. Complex nose with chalk and chocolate notes to the fore. Punchy and powerful with plenty of drive, the tannins plethoric but extremely fine. Power and finesse combined. Huge potential."
