The Plénitude concept (later disgorgement) gives the wines further strength in depth, with a different expression of the wines’ development. Left on the lees until deemed to be going through a second phase of evolution, this offers something which is simply not achievable if you were to have aged the original release in the traditional way. Keeping the wine on the lees (the bottles are actually stored upside down, or sur pointe) means the wine is almost in a state of suspended animation.
The freshness and sheer complexity achieved is astonishing, as testified by the huge scores across the board. Our Head Wine Guru Tom is particularly fond of this wine, having hosted the launch of the first P2 release (1998) as Dom Pérignon’s ambassador in 2015.
What the critics say:
"Magical, showing floral perfumes of jasmine, lavender and orange blossoms. The wonderful center palate has medium body and a depth of fruit that goes on for minutes. Dried apples, limes and flowers. Oyster shell and umami. This has developed beautifully with 16 years on the lees. Stunning. Dosage 4.5 g/L. Drink now."
"This late-release version of the magnificent 2008 is to be put on the market commercially in 2026. Disgorged in 2024 with a dosage of less than 5 g/l – like all four of these 2026 releases. A famous 'classic' vintage. The product of a season that saw cloudy weather for much of it with considerable mildew pressure. Then there was a great September that saved the vintage – a Champagne miracle. A sunny last three weeks changed the mood in Champagne. 'Climate change has been giving more flesh and length to the wines', according to Vincent Chaperon who said that he and the then chef de cave Richard Geoffroy used to liken this wine's muscle to the athlete Usain Bolt. Greenish hue. Very concentrated and evolved, lightly smoky and creates an immediate impression. Dry, serious finish. Extremely tight bead. Very bright fruit. Citrus, even lime. A wine that is tightening up, a bit like a drawstring with tension – like when a bow is drawn back by an arrow. A very grown-up Dom Pérignon."
"In 2008 there was no clear dominance for Pinot Noirs origins and Hautvillers only contributes a small proportion to the blend. For Chardonnays, Chouilly, Cramant and Le Mesnil play a big role alongside Sillery, which is unusually prominent this year. The nose is captivating with glorious yeasty, reductive complexity and notes of sweet lemon-curd pastry, vanilla, and a touch of crunchy pineapple. The palate is rich and silken, lifted by a beam of laser-like acidity and a sizzling sensation of minerality. It stretches beautifully across the palate, concluding with a mouth-watering citrus twist. A glorious Dom Pérignon, where the extra time on lees has contributed exceptional fullness and texturedness."
