Clos Rougeard Saumur-Champigny ‘Les Poyeux’ 2017 is the kind of wine that makes collectors lean in just a little closer. For those already familiar with the mystique of Clos Rougeard, Les Poyeux is a name that carries serious weight - an exquisite single-vineyard Cabernet Franc that embodies the estate’s quiet mastery.
Sourced from a south-facing slope with sandy, limestone-rich soils, Poyeux has always been the more graceful sibling in the Rougeard family - silky, perfumed, and hauntingly elegant, with incredible purity of fruit and that signature mineral undertow. In the 2017 vintage, the wine walks a beautifully fine line: vibrant redcurrants, wild herbs, and subtle floral notes unfurl slowly, grounded by delicate spice and a long, ethereal finish.
This is Cabernet Franc at its most refined - a wine of immense detail and quiet power, as compelling now as it will be with a decade or more in the cellar.
What the critics say:
"Set for release in November 2022, the 2017 Les Poyeux is a delightful wine. While waiting for the winemaker, I was left with a glass of this in the chalky cellars and I really struggled to find anything wrong with it. This is a blend of two parcels within the Poyeux vineyard. It's as if you are drinking a cloud of Cabernet Franc, that floats along in your mouth, before the mouthwatering acidity flows forth. This light to mid-weight wine has incredible density despite its delicacy. The purity of fruit is impressive and shows red cherry, black olive, savory and tea leaf-like tannins. Typically a more accessible wine than Le Bourg, you could drink on release but it will go on and on."
"Elegant and poised with red-berry and floral notes. As is often the case, a burgundian feel. Huge intensity on the palate, the tannins tight and firm but fine as well. Lovely balance. Should age well."
