The bone-dry Vom Roten Schiefer hails from Germany’s Mosel, around Piesport and the steep vineyards lining the river. This cool-climate region is famed for its dramatic slopes and slate-rich soils, which are ideal for precise, expressive Riesling.
The red slate (Roter Schiefer) gives the wine its name and character, storing daytime heat to aid slow ripening and lending a vivid mineral edge, clarity and racy acidity that define top Mosel wines. The 2024 Mosel vintage was marked by a challenging season and low yields, but the quality is high. The wines are fresh and precise, with bright acidity and moderate alcohol.
Clemens and his wife Rita are a humble yet hugely respected duo, having built a cult following over the past 30 years for their incredibly precise, richly textured, and terroir-driven wines. Produced biodynamically and organically since 1984, they are a compelling choice for Riesling enthusiasts who appreciate a mineral-driven profile.
What the critics say:
"The 2024 Riesling vom Roten Schiefer is a mix of the younger vines of Rothenpfad and a pre-harvest from the Nonnengarten. Superb savoriness on the nose blends red apple with iron oxide and petrichor aromas. Slenderness on the palate makes this exquisitely sinuous with a lovely pepperiness. It is buffered, concentrated, svelte, delicious and so savory. (Bone-dry) "
"The 2024er Riesling vom roten Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from iron-rich sectors of the Nonnengarten and the steep classical parts of the Marienburg. This hay-yellow-colored wine offers a superb nose made of fresh herbs, peach, melon, laurel, cream, mirabelle, starfruit, whipped cream, and smoke. It proves superbly playful on the palate, where the creamy part wraps the residual touch of tartness. The finish is packed with fruits, herbs, and fine spices. This is a beautiful Village wine in the making!"
