Clemens Busch's vom Grauen Schiefer is a bone-dry Mosel Riesling from steep parcels in the Pündericher Marienburg vineyard where grey slate ('grauer Schiefer') predominates. This slate type - a hard, compact Devonian rock typical of the upper slopes - gives the wine pronounced minerality and clear structural definition. The fruit comes largely from core Marienburg sites planted on these grey slate soils, reflecting their terroir rather than a single named parcel.
In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts in old Mosel fuder (large oak) barrels, followed by lees ageing. Minimal intervention and low sulphur at bottling are consistent with Clemens Busch’s biodynamic, terroir‑focused philosophy.
The 2024 Mosel vintage was marked by a challenging season and very low yields, but the quality is high. Spring frosts and unsettled weather reduced quantities, yet the surviving fruit delivered classic Mosel Riesling character. The wines are fresh, precise and mineral-driven, with bright acidity and moderate alcohol.

"The 2024 Riesling vom Grauen Schiefer is from the gray slate of the Marienburg, from the mid-slope to the top and along the crest. The subtle slate on the nose is still a little yeasty, but its stone savor is beautifully fresh. Saltiness and slenderness define the palate. This is a clean-cut Riesling with bright, incisive acid smoothed by all the extract. It is exciting and wonderfully expressive of the vintage. (Bone-dry)"
"The 2024er Riesling vom grauen Schiefer, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, comes from grey-slate sectors situated high-up the hill in the classic part of the Marienburg. This white-hay-colored wine offers a refined and engaging nose made of pear, grapefruit zest, spices, and herbs. It is superbly delineated and airy on the palate, where only a touch of tartness still needs dissolving. The finish is beautifully packed with fruits, fine spices, minerals, and a whiff of whipped cream. This is a classy expression of Village Riesling!"
