"The wines are exquisite, and each of the various Marienburg parcels is different: they shimmer aromatically, are alluring and profound, intense yet streamlined. Truly one of the Mosel’s best."
Anne Krebiehl, Vinous
Clemens Busch Nonnengarten Riesling Trocken is a bone-dry Riesling from a steep, south-west-facing vineyard on the right bank of the Mosel at Pünderich. The name (“nuns’ garden”) refers to the historic use of the site - it once belonged to a convent. Nonnengarten is a VDP Erste Lage, the German equivalent of a “Premier Cru”.
The 2024 Mosel vintage was marked by a challenging season and low yields, but the quality is high. The wines are fresh and precise, with bright acidity and moderate alcohol.
Clemens and his wife Rita are a humble yet hugely respected duo, having built a cult following over the past 30 years for their incredibly precise, richly textured, and terroir-driven wines. Produced biodynamically and organically since 1984, they are a compelling choice for Riesling enthusiasts who appreciate a mineral-driven profile.
What the critics say:
"The 2024 Riesling Nonnengarten Erste Lage is from a site of slightly deeper soils based on red slate. The nose is far less open than its little brother vom Roten Schiefer, keeping its cards close to its chest. The palate, however, is fluid, with a lovely smattering of white pepper and something beautifully juicy. Something cooling, bright and lip-smacking is underway but still needs to unfold. (Bone-dry)"
"The Riesling 2024 Nonnengarten 1G, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, was made from fruit picked in this lesser-known full south-facing steep vineyard on iron-rich slate which forms the continuation of the Marienburg. It offers a beautiful nose made of white flowers, fine spices, a hint of pear, aniseed herbs, and smoke. The wine proves superbly playful and elegant on the palate, where a touch of tartness still needs to integrate. The finish is beautifully playful and elegant, but also still a little bit hard at this early stage. This beautiful dry wine offers a great future and could easily exceed our high expectations as it integrates its primary tartness."
