The term Spätlese literally means 'late harvest' in German, referring to grapes picked later in the season when they’ve developed more sugar and flavour concentration. Unlike Auslese or higher Prädikat levels, Spätlese wines can range from delicately off-dry to fully sweet, always with a fine interplay of sweetness and acidity.
The 2024 Mosel vintage was marked by a challenging season and low yields, but the quality is high. The wines are fresh, precise and mineral-driven, with bright acidity and moderate alcohol. 2024 is widely regarded as a strong year for Kabinett and lighter Spätlese styles, emphasising elegance, clarity and purity over power.
"...the stars of the show in 2024 are the Kabinett and Spätlese!"
Anne Krebiehl, Vinous
Clemens and his wife Rita are a humble yet hugely respected duo, having built a cult following over the past 30 years for their incredibly precise, richly textured, and terroir-driven wines. Produced biodynamically and organically since 1984, they are a compelling choice for Riesling enthusiasts who appreciate a mineral-driven profile.
What the critics say:
"The 2024 Pündericher Marienburg Spätlese combines notions of bergamot and white peach. The palate is bright with an inner richness of fruit with a tart-sweet thrill of ripe passion fruit. All is pervaded and delineated by lemon zest on the slender body. This is light, citric, vibrant and animating. Its lip-smacking electric nature make it irresistible, drinkable and immensely appetizing. (Sweet)"
"The Riesling 2024 Marienburg Spätlese, as it is referred to on the main part of the label, is a sweet wine with a beautiful nose made of fresh herbs, peach, apricot blossom, and fine herbal element, all wrapped into cream. It is beautifully playful and elegant on the palate and leaves a gorgeous feel of passion fruit, pear, mirabelle, and whipped cream in the long and mouthwatering finish. This is a superb wine in the making."
