Clemens Busch Marienburg Riesling GG is a bone-dry Grosses Gewächs Riesling from the steep, biodynamically farmed Pündericher Marienburg vineyard in the Mosel. This wine is sourced from parcels dominated by grey slate, especially those just below the Marienburg monastery, where the slate soils give the wine cool precision, minerality and structural tension typical of top Mosel Riesling.
In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous with native yeasts and the wine is traditionally handled in the classic Mosel style, with ageing on fine lees and minimal intervention. The 2024 Mosel vintage was marked by a challenging season and very low yields, yet the quality is high. Spring frosts and unsettled weather reduced quantities, but the wines are fresh, precise and mineral-driven
Clemens and his wife Rita are the charming and humble couple behind Clemens Busch, a winery that has gained a cult following over the past three decades for their laser-sharp, richly textured, terroir-defined wines.
Among the first German winemakers to embrace organic farming in 1984, their estate fully transitioned to biodynamic production in 2005. They are members of the prestigious VDP organisation of the top producers in Germany.
What the critics say:
"The 2024 Riesling Pündericher Marienburg Grosses Gewächs is from the gray slate of a parcel below the castle. Stone and a touch of reduction make for an alluring nose. The palate already is a wonderful unity of stoniness, slate and ripe, taut, juicy lemon. It has a beautifully bright linearity, moving forward with lovely balance and drive on the svelte body. (Bone-dry) "
"An intense nose of apricot, lime, wild herbs and wet stone, with accents of black pepper and pine. A compelling paradox on the palate: ripe, melting sherbet-like fruit in shades of orange and pink is cut by a taut, redcurrant live wire that enhances a driven, phenolic bitterness on the lingering finish. Deep, lithe and complex."
