Clemens Busch Raffes 2014 is a profound Mosel Riesling that captures the depth and intensity of one of the region’s most compelling sites. Clemens and his wife Rita are a humble yet hugely respected duo, having built a cult following over the past 30 years for wines of remarkable precision, rich texture and uncompromising terroir expression. In the world of Riesling, the Mosel is king — and their wines capture its essence like few others can.
Raffes lies within the Falkenlay, a steep, grey-slate vineyard that produces Clemens Busch’s most powerful and textural wines. This is the estate’s crown jewel: dense yet poised, with layers of stone fruit, smoky slate and saline minerality, all carried by vibrant acidity and a long, resonant finish.
The 2014 vintage in the Mosel was challenging but ultimately rewarding for meticulous growers. Careful vineyard work and strict selection resulted in wines of freshness, clarity and precision rather than overt richness — qualities that suit Raffes perfectly, lending tension and elegance to its natural concentration.
Although Clemens and Rita formally joined the Respekt group of biodynamic producers in 2015, their philosophy was established decades earlier. Herbicides were abandoned as far back as 1976, and organic viticulture has long been central to their approach.
What the critics say:
"From vines that are more than 70-years-old, Busch's 2014 Riesling Raffes comes from the best and driest plot in the Falkenlay, where he always picks healthy grapes (on the same day like the Felsterrasse). The 2014 ended up with 13.4% alcohol and 10.7 residual sugar (with a sugar free extract of 30.2 grams per liter); the wine opens very clear, intense and aromatic on the nose where slate flavors intermix with perfectly ripe pear aromas. Full-bodied, rich and very intense on the palate, with a dense texture of melting stones and minerals, this is highly elegant and complex Riesling that tastes like a noble Auslese but dry. This is a perfectly balanced (and piquant!) Riesling of extraordinary quality. The finish is endless, salty and stimulating. Although this is an expensive Riesling, it is worth each of the 100 U.S. Dollars. And it pays for a great experience."
