Château Palmer, Alter Ego de Palmer 2022 is the respected second wine of the Troisième Cru Classé estate in Margaux, Bordeaux, made from vineyards that sit on the region’s classic gravel-rich soils near the Gironde estuary.
Alter Ego was created in 1998 not as a mere “second wine” of lesser material, but as a distinct expression of the estate’s terroir using different vinification choices and blending proportions to yield a wine that is more accessible in youth while still reflecting the quality of the terroir. Vinified and aged with care, it's a wine with generous fruit, supple tannins and aromatic depth.
The 2022 vintage in Margaux was marked by a warm, dry growing season with some beneficial mid-summer rains, yielding small, perfectly ripe grapes with concentrated phenolics and strong structure. At Palmer this translated into wines with expressive fruit, refined texture and harmonious balance despite the challenging conditions.
What the critics say:
"The minerality and intensity to this wine is very impressive with blackberry and blue berry aromas and flavors. Salt and pepper. It’s full and linear with a brightness and freshness. Compacted center palate."
"The 2022 Alter Ego is bright, punchy and focused. Floral notes meld into a core of red/purplish fruit, spice, mint and orange peel. Medium in body and gracious, with sublime balance, Alter Ego is superb. In fact, the 2022 is one of the most refined editions I have tasted. It is not a very typical wine for Bordeaux, but it is among the classiest and most distinctive, without a doubt."
