Château d'Esclans' Rock Angel, "Whispering Angel in a leather jacket", has a creamy texture due to partial oak aging complemented by flinty minerality that adds complexity, and a long silky finish.

One of the most sought after from the Côte de Provence and a must-have rosé in spring and summer.

Rock Angel is built for immediate pleasure and should be consumed within 2-3 years of vintage for optimal freshness. In its first year, the primary fruit flavours remain vibrant and the mineral tension is at its peak. By year two, the oak integration becomes even more seamless while maintaining the wine's essential brightness. Unlike some premium rosés, this doesn't benefit from extended cellaring as its charm lies in youthful precision rather than developed complexity. Beyond 2028, expect the mineral edge to soften and the fruit to become more muted.

What the critics say:

92/100 James Suckling

"A well-balanced and flavorful rosé with notes of red currants, candied raspberries and mild spices on the nose. It’s medium-bodied and focused, with a delicious stream of forest berries and a tangy, mouthwatering finish. Drink now."

Tasting Notes

AppearancePale salmon pink with brilliant clarity and a hint of copper at the rim.

NoseRed currants and candied raspberries lead, followed by subtle spice and a whisper of vanilla from oak contact. There's a lovely mineral lift underneath, like wet limestone after rain. The aromatics are focused rather than exuberant, promising precision on the palate.

PalateMedium-bodied with impressive texture from partial oak ageing, this feels creamy yet maintains bright acidity. Forest berries dominate the mid-palate while flinty minerality adds backbone and prevents any sense of heaviness. The oak integration is seamless, adding structure without masking the fruit's natural vibrancy.

FinishLong and tangy with mouthwatering acidity that leaves you reaching for another sip.

Overall impressionThis is Provence rosé with serious intent, balancing elegance with substance in a way that few manage.

Food Pairings

In Provence, Rock Angel would grace tables laden with bouillabaisse, the saffron-scented fish stew that demands a wine with both delicacy and strength. Locals would pair it with grilled loup de mer (sea bass) brushed with herbes de Provence, or perhaps a plateau de fruits de mer featuring sweet Méditerranée oysters and langoustines. The wine's mineral backbone makes it perfect with goat's cheese from nearby hills, particularly the ash-dusted crottins that appear in every village market. For heartier fare, think ratatouille niçoise or daube provençale served cool on summer evenings.

FAQs

What makes Rock Angel different from Whispering Angel?

Rock Angel sees partial oak ageing which gives it a creamier texture and more structure, while maintaining the mineral backbone that Provence is known for. It's essentially Whispering Angel with more gravitas.

How long will this wine keep once opened?

Rock Angel will stay fresh in the fridge for 2-3 days after opening thanks to its good acidity and structure from oak contact.

What food pairs best with this rosé?

The wine's mineral backbone and creamy texture make it brilliant with seafood, particularly grilled fish, bouillabaisse, or a plateau of oysters and langoustines. It also works beautifully with goat's cheese.

Should I age this wine in my cellar?

No, Rock Angel is built for immediate pleasure and should be enjoyed within 2-3 years while its mineral precision and bright fruit remain at their peak.

What's the ideal serving temperature?

Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C in a medium white wine glass to preserve the bright acidity and allow the delicate aromatics to concentrate properly.

Is this wine worth the premium over basic Provence rosé?

Absolutely. The partial oak ageing and mineral complexity put this in a different league from simple summer rosés, offering real substance while maintaining elegance.
