Château Canon La Gaffelière sits on Saint-Émilion's precious southern slopes, where limestone and clay soils produce some of the Right Bank's most elegant wines. This Grand Cru Classé estate crafts a Merlot-driven blend that balances the richness of its clay terroir with the mineral precision that only comes from limestone bedrock.

"Deep dark ruby garnet, opaque core, violet reflections, delicate edge brightening. Fine herbal spice, red heart cherries, blackberry confit and candied mandarin zest, inviting bouquet. Juicy, elegant, extract-sweet texture, fine spicy tannins, some caramel on the finish, ripe heart cherries, alty aftertaste, already well developed, an accessible food companion, sure maturity potential."
The vineyard sits on Saint-Émilion's coveted côtes, where limestone bedrock lies beneath a thin layer of clay and sand. This southern exposure captures maximum sunlight while the limestone provides excellent drainage and mineral complexity. The clay retains just enough moisture to support the Merlot vines during dry spells, whilst the limestone adds the backbone and longevity that defines great Saint-Émilion. At 80 metres elevation, the site benefits from cooling breezes that preserve acidity during warm vintages.
Saint-Émilion Grand Cru represents the pinnacle of Right Bank winemaking, with stricter regulations than the basic Saint-Émilion appellation including lower yields and longer ageing requirements. The classification system, unique in Bordeaux, is reviewed every decade, ensuring estates maintain their standards. Canon La Gaffelière holds Grand Cru Classé status, placing it among the top tier of producers. Unlike the Left Bank's Cabernet Sauvignon dominance, Saint-Émilion celebrates Merlot and Cabernet Franc, producing wines with earlier appeal but serious ageing potential.
The 2025 Bordeaux vintage emerged from one of the most demanding growing seasons in recent memory — the earliest budbreak since 1989, June temperatures second only to 2003 since records began, and an unusually early harvest beginning in August for the whites. Conditions that should have produced heavy, overripe wines. They didn't. Decanter's Georgie Hindle, who tasted close to 200 wines ahead of the formal campaign, describes "exceptional concentration, aromatic purity and a freshness that contradicts the record-breaking heat.
The early critical consensus places 2025 stylistically between the precision of 2020 and the structure of 2016, with the brightness of 2023 — a combination that suggests a very serious vintage indeed. Yields are dramatically low, the smallest crop since 1991, with production across the Gironde running around 15% below the five-year average. The quality is here. There simply isn't very much of it.
