This estate is one of the oldest in Bordeaux, with physical evidence in the vineyard of vines first being cultivated by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago.
The modern era, however, is when the winery as we know it really began to take shape. It has been owned by the Bécot family since 1970 and in 1985, Gerard and Dominique took over the running of the domaine, who started to lower yields and produce better wine. Gerard’s daughter, Juliette, alongside Julien Barthe and Thomas Duclos, are the composers of the estate’s recent stratospheric rise and excellent vintages.
Its location on the limestone plateau of Saint-Émilion, a terroir of clay that has deep, limestone soil, has resulted in special wines of great intensity and length which critics have been deeply impressed with.
What the critics say:
"A blend of 78% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Franc, the 2024 Beau-Séjour Bécot was picked in late September. Clusters were open rather than compact, lessening botrytis pressure, making it easier to wait to attain full maturity. Offering up aromas of dark berries, violets, rose petals and spices, it's medium to full-bodied, polished and layered, with beautifully refined tannin, integrated acidity and a long, aromatic finish. Once again, this impeccably managed estate has delivered a terrific performance in challenging conditions."
"Dark chocolate, Amarena cherry, rum sultana. Also medicinal notes. Dark berries. Bitter herbs. A pithy, slightly greenish tannin on the palate, with a good chalky- mineral background, medium-bodied flavours, juicy, ending with a certain austerity. Overall a rather forced wine. (Tasted by Dr Ulrich Sautter)"
