Optimal drinking window: Now - 2035

Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard spans an impressive range of vineyards and has significantly elevated its reputation over the past decade. The wines are distinguished by their clear purity, vibrant minerality, and a harmonious balance of richness and fruit intensity.

Medium-bodied and finely structured, the 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge has a vibrant core of red fruit, silky tannins, and a refined mineral streak. A balanced acidity enhances its freshness and liveliness. Enjoy it with roasted duck, guinea fowl, pan-seared salmon or grilled tuna.

The 2021 is drinking beautifully now, with its primary red fruit at its most expressive and the mineral elements perfectly integrated. Over the next 3-4 years, expect the fruit to become more complex as secondary notes of earth and forest floor develop further. The wine should reach its plateau around 2029-2030, maintaining its freshness and appeal for another 5-6 years beyond that. This isn't built for decades of cellaring, but rather for medium-term enjoyment whilst retaining its essential vibrancy.

What the critics say:

89-91/100 Neal Martin, Vinous

"The 2021 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge has a tertiary red berry and undergrowth-tinged bouquet that unfurls gradually in the glass. The palate is well balanced with an edgy opening and fresh red berry fruit with a lively appealing finish. Worth seeking out. "

Tasting Notes

AppearanceMedium ruby with bright clarity and a youthful rim.

NoseRed berries emerge gradually, joined by forest floor and subtle undergrowth. There's a lovely mineral thread running through the fruit, with hints of dried herbs and a touch of oak spice. The aromatics unfurl slowly, revealing more complexity with time in the glass.

PalateMedium-bodied with an edgy, vibrant opening that speaks to the wine's freshness. Red berry fruit dominates - cranberry and red cherry - supported by silky tannins and that distinctive mineral streak. The balance between fruit intensity and structure is particularly appealing, with lively acidity driving the wine forward.

FinishFresh and appealing with lingering red fruit and a clean mineral persistence.

Overall impressionA refined Chassagne rouge that captures the appellation's mineral precision whilst delivering genuine charm.

Food Pairings

In Burgundy, this style of refined red would traditionally accompany coq au vin made with the local wine, or perhaps a classic boeuf bourguignon prepared with plenty of mushrooms and lardons. Game birds like guinea fowl or partridge are autumn favourites, often roasted simply with herbs from the local markets. The region's excellent charcuterie - particularly jambon persillé or andouillette de Troyes - makes for perfect bistro pairings, whilst local cheeses like Époisses or Chaource provide a lovely contrast to the wine's mineral freshness.

FAQs

What does this wine taste like?

Fresh and mineral-driven with vibrant red berry fruit, silky tannins, and a distinctive limestone backbone that gives it real character.

When is the best time to drink this wine?

It's lovely now but will develop more complexity over the next few years, reaching its peak around 2029-2032.

What food pairs well with Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge?

Perfect with roasted duck, guinea fowl, or salmon. The mineral freshness also works beautifully with mushroom dishes and soft cheeses.

How should I serve this wine?

Serve slightly cool at 15-16°C in generous burgundy glasses. No need to decant - it shows well straight from the bottle.

Is this wine worth cellaring?

Yes, for medium-term cellaring. It will reward 5-8 years of patience but isn't built for decades like the grands crus.

How does this compare to other Burgundy reds?

Chassagne rouge offers excellent value compared to famous neighbours like Volnay, with similar refinement but more mineral character and often better pricing.
