This excellent Premier Cru has plenty of sweet red berry fruit with a hint of coffee - very open and juicy with good concentration and ripe tannins. Good to go straight away but it will reward the patient.
The wines from Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard have a clear purity and minerality as well as a lovely weight and richness of fruit. Céline Fontaine and her husband Fred Robert (formerly of Armand Rousseau) specialise in whites, and over the past decade have raised their stock exponentially.
Céline has introduced using only natural yeast and prefers to age the top cru’s slightly longer in tank, meaning they age more slowly in bottle than we saw previously. This is a well-regarded estate which has moved into its next epoch and with quality only on the rise, there is a lot to love about all of these wines.
"The 2020 is more serious. 2022 is more charming. The reds are like 2019, for the easy ripeness, but the structure is more like 2020. What impresses me about this vintage is the concentration.”

What the critics say:
"The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge Morgeot 1er Cru is certainly more flattering on the nose than the Clos Saint-Jean at the moment, with ebullient red berry and blueberry fruit, well-defined and expressive. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. There's plenty of fleshy red fruit with cracked black pepper and allspice towards the finish. Maybe the Domaine's strongest red this vintage. Very fine. "
"A ripe but exuberantly fresh nose combines notes of pepper, red cherry and just turned earth. The delicious medium-bodied flavors possess a more refined mid-palate texture than usual that contrasts somewhat with the rustic, youthfully austere and slightly warm finish where a touch of wood appears."
