Chanin Wine Co. is devoted to expressing the distinct character of Santa Barbara County’s finest vineyards, with a particular focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay — two varieties that transparently reflect place. The Duvarita Vineyard, cooled by Pacific breezes and rooted in complex, marine-based soils, is ideally suited to Pinot Noir, benefiting from a long, even growing season that builds nuance and natural balance.
The 2014 vintage in Santa Barbara was warm, dry and notably consistent, producing wines of purity, ripeness and beautifully polished structure. In Chanin’s hands, this translates to a Pinot Noir defined by finesse and quiet complexity rather than weight.
Winemaking here is deliberately hands-off: native fermentations, no modern additives, no filtration and no intrusive processing.
What the critics say:
"Game, smoke, licorice, herbs, earthiness, tobacco and dried flowers are some of the signatures in the 2014 Pinot Noir Duvarita Vineyard. This cold microclimate and sandy soils yields a distinctive style of Pinot with expressive savory characteristics and mid-weight structure, qualities that are accentuated by the inclusion of 15% whole clusters. I would give the 2014 a year or two for the tannins to soften. "
"Autumn leaves, savory spice, sweet cherry and dried flower aromas and flavors all show in the light ruby colored 2014 Pinot Noir Duvarita Vineyard. This medium-bodied, silky, elegant Pinot Noir has no hard edges, impeccable balance and a great finish. This comes from a cool site located just outside of Lompoc, on the western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills, where the soils are mostly sandy loam. It spent 12 months in 20% new French oak prior to bottling."
