In 2023, Guillaume Tardy began the harvest on September 11, seizing the warm, dry window before rain arrived. This vintage also marked a new chapter for the estate, with Tardy introducing a gentle destemmer designed to preserve the integrity of each grape without breaking the skins, resulting in wines with refined perfumes and softer tannins. The 2023s show a shift toward elegance and suppleness, moving away from previous vintages' emphasis on power.
"Aromas of cloves and baked spices immediately greet the nose, mingling with deep black fruit. The palate shows impressive concentration yet a light touch, balancing structure and length. Aged in 35% new oak."
Our note
The grapes were picked at optimal ripeness with sugar levels between 12.5-13% and a pH of 3.4-3.5. Yields averaged 45-48 Hl/Ha, except for Échezeaux at 40 Hl/Ha. Bottling is expected in February. By contrast, 2024 yielded just 53 barrels (compared to 120 in 2023), as difficult growing conditions took a toll, although quality remains promising.
Optimal drinking window: 2026 - 2036
What the critics say:
"The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny Les Athets has a perfumed bouquet with expressive raspberry and wild strawberry scents. This is quintessential Chambolle. The oak is neatly enmeshed here. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky smooth entry. lt's not a heavy Chambolle, but light on its feet with gentle grip toward the spiced finish with a saline aftertaste. This is better than the 2022 and is highly recommended."
