Catena Zapata's 2018 Catena Appellation San Carlos Cabernet Franc is lively and structured, with juicy fruit, fine-grained tannins, and a refreshing thread of acidity that carries through to a long, smooth finish - a vibrant expression of Cabernet Franc.

The grapes come from the family’s historic San Carlos vineyards in the Uco Valley, planted at around 1,090 m on sandy-loam soils over calcareous rock. After a short cold maceration, the wine undergoes a careful fermentation and spends 12 months in French oak (35% new) to round out its texture and complexity.

Founded in 1902, Catena Zapata is one of Argentina’s great wine dynasties. Under Nicolás Catena and his daughter, Dr Laura Catena, the estate pioneered high-altitude winemaking in Mendoza, focusing on exceptional vineyard sites in the Andes foothills. The result is a collection of elegant, terroir-driven wines that have come to define modern Argentine fine wine.

What the critics say:

93/100James Suckling

"This variety looks at home here, showing a fresh edge of light herbs across red berries and red plums. The palate has a very seamless, supple feel and a fresh, elegant yet long finish. Good depth here. Drink or hold."

92/100Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

"Yields for Cabernet Franc in 2018 were low, so there is less of the 2018 Appellation San Carlos Cabernet Franc, but the style goes back to the style of the 2016 more than the 2017, with very good freshness and very good integration of the oak, which is quite transparent and lets the character of the cool place come through in a more precise way. It's easily identifiable as Cabernet Franc, it's integrated and it makes you salivate. 18,750 bottles produced. It was bottled in October 2018."
