Romitorio, also formerly labelled 'Il Toro', 'R' and 'Romitoro' until it was renamed from 2021, was the first ever wine produced by Sandro Chia at Castello Romitorio in the early 1980s, and is a true synthesis between innovation and tradition.
Romitorio IGT is a baby SuperTuscan 50/50 blend of Syrah and Petit Verdot from Maremma.
Ruby red in color, warm, spicy, fruit-forward, but with excellent acidity which makes it a perfectly balanced wine. It shows beautifully enjoyed young, as well as after a few years of bottle aging. As Filippo Chia always describes it, Romitorio IGT is Rhone Valley and Bordeaux meeting up and blending in Maremma, the Southernmost part of Tuscany, which is a fluvial area with a strong marine influence. The aging lasts for about 18 months in stainless steel mostly.
What the critics say:
"A fresh and crunchy red with dark cherries, currants, crushed flowers and a little bit of chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied. So lively and bright with textured, chalky tannins. Attractive juiciness with cherries and red spice undertones. Mineral and savory with some salinity at the end. Drink or hold."
