Castello di Neive's Santo Stefano vineyard sits on one of Barbaresco's finest slopes, where calcareous clay soils and perfect south-facing exposure coax remarkable elegance from Nebbiolo. This 2020 captures everything we love about this cru: the tension between rose-petal perfume and earthy depth, the way fine tannins frame rather than dominate, and that distinctive mineral thread that runs through the best wines of this village.
At six years old, it's drinking beautifully now but has the structure and breeding to develop until the early 2040s. We find Santo Stefano always more approachable in youth than some of its Barbaresco neighbours, yet no less serious for it.
The Santo Stefano vineyard sits on calcareous-clay soils with excellent south-western exposure in the heart of Barbaresco village. These limestone-rich soils drain well whilst retaining enough moisture for the late-ripening Nebbiolo grape, whilst the elevation and aspect provide the temperature swings that preserve acidity and develop complex aromatics. The combination creates wines with both structure and elegance, expressing the more refined side of Nebbiolo compared to neighbouring Barolo.
Barbaresco is Nebbiolo's more elegant expression, covering just three villages compared to Barolo's eleven. The wines must be aged for a minimum of 26 months with at least nine in oak, though most producers exceed this. Santo Stefano is one of Barbaresco's most celebrated crus, known for producing wines with particular finesse and longevity. The denomination's smaller size and more maritime influence creates wines that are generally more approachable earlier than Barolo, yet still capable of decades of evolution.
The 2020 vintage in Piemonte arrived with drama and delivered surprises. A warm, dry summer had producers bracing for another powerful, concentrated year, but September rain changed the script entirely. The downpours refreshed the vines just when they needed it most, allowing for extended hang time without the grapes shrivelling on the vine. Harvest stretched later than expected, with many producers picking Nebbiolo well into October under ideal conditions.
What emerged defied the early predictions of another blockbuster vintage. Instead of the muscular, tannic powerhouses that hot years often produce, 2020 gave us wines with surprising freshness and immediate appeal. The Nebbiolo shows lovely fruit purity without the grip that usually demands years of patience, while Barbera retained its natural acidity despite the warm growing season. These wines are drinking beautifully now, offering rare early pleasure from a region where waiting is usually part of the bargain.
