Castello di Neive has been making wine in Barbaresco since 1964, and their Arneis from the Montebertotto vineyard shows exactly why this ancient Piemontese grape deserves attention beyond its role as a palate cleanser. This is Arneis with personality rather than politeness.
Fresh pear and white peach mingle with that characteristic herbal lift that makes Arneis so food-friendly, while crisp acidity keeps everything bright and focused. Drink now until 2028 whilst the fruit still has its spring in its step.
The Montebertotto vineyard sits in the broader Langhe hills surrounding the more famous Barbaresco slopes, where calcareous clay soils and a slightly cooler microclimate suit Arneis perfectly. The altitude and exposure provide the temperature swings that preserve acidity in this early-ripening variety. These limestone-rich soils contribute the mineral backbone that prevents Arneis from becoming overly soft or neutral, giving the wine its characteristic tension between fruit and stone.
Langhe DOC was created in 1994 as a more flexible appellation covering the hills around Alba, allowing producers to work with both international and traditional Piemontese varieties outside the strict rules of Barolo and Barbaresco. For Arneis, Langhe designation often indicates fruit from vineyards just outside the Roero DOCG zone where the grape finds its most famous expression. The broader Langhe appellation gives winemakers more freedom in vineyard selection and winemaking techniques whilst maintaining the regional character that makes Piemontese whites distinctive.
The 2024 growing season in Piemonte delivered what many producers are calling a return to classical conditions after several years of climate extremes. Spring arrived with balanced temperatures and adequate rainfall, setting the vines up well before a warm, dry summer that avoided the punishing heat spikes that have marked recent vintages. The harvest unfolded at a civilised pace through September and into early October, allowing producers to pick each parcel at optimal ripeness without the frantic race against weather that has become all too familiar.
What emerged from the cellars shows remarkable freshness and precision across all varieties. The Nebbiolo displays that ethereal perfume and firm tannin structure that makes great Barolo and Barbaresco, whilst Barbera retains its vibrant acidity alongside ripe fruit flavours. Dolcetto shows particular promise, with concentrated colour and that distinctive bitter cherry character we love. Quality levels are consistently high rather than spectacular, and we think that's exactly what Piemonte needed after the rollercoaster of recent years. The whites are drinking beautifully now, whilst the reds will reward patience until 2028 and beyond.
