Ama was owned by the Firidolfi family during the Holy Roman Empire. The castle, which stands in the denomination, was probably destroyed in the fifteenth century during the Aragonese invasions in the Chianti area.

Haiku embraces the principles of honesty, depth, simplicity and naturalness that characterise the entire production of Castello di Ama. The name comes from a traditional Haiku poem originating in Japan consists of three lines. It's a poem by simple tones without any title, the world's shortest eliminating frills lexical and draws its strength from the suggestions of nature and the seasons. Given its brevity, the composition requires a great synthesis of thought and image.

What the critics say:

96/100Antonio Galloni, Vinous

"The 2019 Haiku is captivating. Bright and expressive, with brisk acids, the 2019 hits all the right notes. Black cherry, plum, incense, tobacco, crushed rocks and lavender race across the palate. I see more depth and also greater energy than in earlier vintages here, and that's great to see."

95/100Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

"The Castello di Ama 2019 Haiku is a blend of 50% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc. Marco Pallanti calls it "the alter ego of San Lorenzo," and the association to Japanese poetry is meant to portray "something simple that means a lot," he tells me during my visit to the estate. However, the Tuscan imprint is very strong in this wine, and although Merlot suffers from a changing climate, the Cabernet Franc imparts a firm and lasting textural impact. The Sangiovese brings in ruby fruit, rose, herb and fresh acidity. The 2019 vintage is big-boned, but it moves with grace and precision."

OUR GROWERS

Castello di Ama

Castello di Ama's origins trace back to Etruscan times, a testament to the enduring connection between this land and human creativity. Ama was owned by the Firidolfi family during the Holy Roman Empire. The medieval castle that once graced these grounds fell during the Aragonese invasions in the 15th century. In the early 1700s, new villas rose from the same stones, marking the birth of the Castello di Ama estate.
