This female star-studded cast of winemakers is an admirable family-run operation that dates back to 1989 when life force of the estate, Patrizia, decided she wanted to make Brunello. What was once a deteriorating property is now a winery buzzing with life and passion. Beyond the hectares of land freckled with olive groves are Sangiovese vines dedicated to producing Brunello di Montalcino.

The vineyards can be found in the southeast at a high altitude with soil composed of volcanic rock and compacted clay (or Galestro). They are harvested by hand and then fermented with indigenous yeasts. Drawn from carefully selected parcels, the Riserva 123 is produced only in the strongest vintages.

The 2020 vintage in Montalcino was warm and sunny, producing wines of ripe fruit and generosity, yet crucially balanced by well-timed rainfall and cool nights that preserved acidity.

What the critics say:

94/100Eric Guido, Vinous

"The 2020 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 123 is highly expressive, mixing crushed cherries with minty herbs, autumnal spices and shavings of orange. Sleek and beautifully balanced, it features racy acidity and radiant red and black fruits that glide across the senses with ease. A web of fine tannins and a subtly chewy sensation remain, as violet inner florals linger long. "

93/100James Suckling

"Classic Brunello with toasty aromas, dark fruits and floral whiffs. Crunchy on the palate with tight, chalky tannins, medium body, crisp acidity and an austere finish. Try from 2027."

OUR GROWERS

Patrizia Cencioni

Inspired by her grandfather, Giuseppe Cencioni, a founding member of the Brunello di Montalcino Consorzio, Patrizia Cencioni opened her own winery and pioneered an entirely new agricultural approach to winemaking. We are permanently impressed with the results.
