Poggio Antico's Brunello is crafted from 100 % Sangiovese grapes grown on some of the highest vineyards in the appellation, between roughly 480 m and 620 m above sea level just south of Montalcino in Tuscany, Italy. The estate’s elevation and breezes from the nearby Tyrrhenian coast slow ripening, helping preserve acidity and build aromatic intensity — features that underpin this wine’s precision and finesse.
Famously the first Brunello to makes it ways onto the Bordeaux-based negociant system La Place, Poggio Antico was acquired by a Belgian investor in 2017 who has spared no expense in trying to push the estate to the front rank of Montalcino, and they are very much succeeding.
What the critics say:
"Tonic and bright, the organic Poggio Antico 2021 Brunello di Montalcino delivers vibrant energy and vertical lift shaped by fruit that ripened with determination on the estate’s low-fertility soils. The wine hits the mark for transparency and focus, unfolding over a silky, ample palate with length and poise, making it one of the more immediately appealing expressions of the vintage. Freshness carries the structure without demanding extended patience, suggesting early approachability without sacrificing integrity. Production totals 40,719 bottles."
