Brunello di Montalcino Ofelio from Patrizia Cencioni is a focused, terroir-driven expression of Sangiovese, named in tribute to Patrizia’s father and produced only from the estate’s best fruit.
The vineyards lie in the south-east of Montalcino, at higher altitude, where galestro clay mixed with volcanic material brings natural freshness, firm structure and aromatic lift. Farming is hands-on and precise, with low yields, manual harvesting and fermentations carried out with indigenous yeasts to preserve purity and site character. Ageing takes place primarily in large oak casks, allowing the wine to develop complexity without masking its origins.
This female star-studded cast of winemakers is an admirable family-run operation that dates back to 1989 when life force of the estate, Patrizia, decided she wanted to make Brunello. What was once a deteriorating property is now a winery buzzing with life and passion.
What the critics say:
"The Patrizia Cencioni 2021 Brunello Ofelio is a stunning wine. It opens with heady scents of sandalwood, underbrush, lavender, Mediterranean scrub, new leather and cedar. Picking up where the nose leaves off, the full-bodied, focused palate delivers ripe red plum, black cherry, licorice and vanilla set against firm, fine-grained tannins and bright acidity. Still quite young and primary, this promises great aging potential so give it time to fully develop. Drink 2033–2046."
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino Ofelio is dark and deeply alluring, with a rich blend of crushed black cherries and autumnal spices lifted by nuances of rubbed sage and dusty rose. It displays a lovely balance of soft, round textures and fleshy red berry fruits, while a tactile mineral tinge adds a crunchy sensation toward the close. A cascade of inner florals resonates over a bed of fine-grained tannins as the 2021 tapers off with admirable length and a pleasantly bitter twang."
