Nestled near Castelnuovo dell’Abate in south-east Montalcino, Mastrojanni is a traditional estate now under Illy ownership, consistently producing some of the region’s finest Brunello. Their vines are in peak form, yielding wines of remarkable depth and clarity, with minimal use of barriques to let the terroir shine.

What the critics say:

94/100Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

"Beautifully saturated and dark, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino offers a distinctively sophisticated personality. There's an air of nobility that is natural to Brunello, but that comes in limited supply in this warm vintage. You definitely get it here. The wine's bouquet offers a compelling medley of dark fruit tones that shift into savory spicy and balsam herb. Those automatic transitions are smooth and seamless. Another nice quality of the wine is that no one element overpowers or overshadows the other. It offers a great sense of balance. This wine has many cards to play and I am confident it will play them well over the next ten years of its evolution. "

93+/100Ian d'Agata, Vinous

"Luminous red. Highly complex nose offers aromas of red cherry, raspberry, flint and violet, plus a touch of beef bouillon; this is a candidate for the most complex nose of the vintage. Then textbook Sangiovese flavors of flinty red cherries, licorice and minerals. Long and clean on the perfumed, highly mineral finish."

OUR GROWERS

Mastrojanni

Stylistically the estate represents a rounder, more traditional style of Brunello, with ripe, generous tannins and deep concentrated fruit. The vines are in their golden age, reaching their "prime production" according to Monica Larner and revealing hauntingly profound expressions of Sangiovese.
