A traditional Brunello from Mastrojanni’s vineyards in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, this 100% Sangiovese was fermented with care and aged for around 30 months in large oak casks, preserving fruit purity while building structure and complexity.

Mastrojanni is known for its poised, savoury style, and the 2009 reflects that hallmark balance between depth and refinement.

What the critics say:

90/100Ian d'Agata, Vinous

"Bright red. Rich nose offers scents of ripe red cherry, spices and smoke. Dense and suave on the palate, with spicy and peppery nuances to the ripe red cherry, tar and licorice flavors. Finishes long and full, with youthfully chewy tannins. There1s a trace of alcoholic warmth attesting to the southeastern Montalcino location of Mastrojanni1s vineyards, but this is nonetheless one of the best entry-level Brunellos in some time from this estate. "

90/100James Suckling

"A clean, fresh red with dried-strawberry and lemon-rind character. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a chewy finish. Always excellent. Drink or hold."

OUR GROWERS

Mastrojanni

The Mastrojanni Estate is situated in the south-east corner of the Montalcino region, set apart up a dirt road from the village of Castelnuovo dell'Abate. The wines are traditional and terroir-driven and the winery eschews the use of barriques as one might expect from such traditionalists. Having been purchased by coffee giants Illy, the estate has enjoyed even greater success in recent years and is now rated in the top 10 in the region.
