For decades Boekenhoutskloof has set the benchmark for quality in Stellenbosch, widely admired for wines that combine bold fruit, intelligent structure and a unique sense of place.
90% of the 2023 Boekenhoutskloof Syrah is drawn from Porseleinberg. The eponymous wine from this hallowed site, now one of South Africa’s most cult wines received 100 points from Tim Atkin in 2023. The consistency and quality of the site shines through, producing wines of remarkable depth, precision and energy. With 96 points from Atkin and under £29 a bottle in bond, Porseleinberg’s younger brother is a true hidden gem.
What the critics say:
"Gottfried Mocke makes this complex, layered Syrah with grapes from Porseleinberg and a 10% contribution from the Goldmine property, both in the Swartland. Fermented with 60% whole bunches and aged in foudres and 600-litre barrels, it's an intensely perfumed style, with engaging violet, rose petal and fynbos top notes, savoury tannins and layers of blackberry, liquorice and oolong tea."
