For decades Boekenhoutskloof has set the benchmark for quality in Stellenbosch, widely admired for wines that combine bold fruit, intelligent structure and a unique sense of place.
Boekenhoutskloof’s Semillon is one of South Africa’s most distinctive whites, made from some of the country’s oldest bush vines, with parcels dating back over a century. The blend is 98% Semillon with a small 2% addition of Muscat d’Alexandria to gently lift the aromatics.
Dry-farmed, unirrigated vines yield small, concentrated berries. The fruit is whole-bunch pressed and fermented spontaneously in a mix of barriques and concrete eggs, then matured for up to 14 months, largely in new French oak with the balance in concrete.
Based in the Bohoek, the southernmost corner of the Franschhoek Valley, Boekenhoutskloof dates back to 1776. Today, under Marc Kent and chief winemaker Gottfried Mocke, the estate continues to set benchmarks for South African fine wine, particularly through its profound, age-worthy expressions of old-vine Semillon.
What the critics say:
"One of a handful of Cape whites that I buy most years and expect to cellar for a decade, this is a subtle, refined, early picked Franschhoek blend of Semillon and 3% Muscat d'Alexandrie. Deftly fermented in 70% new barrels, it has beguiling aromas of vanilla spice, cardamom and saffron, layers of tangerine, beeswax and fresh lemons and understated concentration."
