Blandy’s is one of the most respected and historic names in Madeira, with a legacy that stretches back to 1811. Still family-owned and run by the 7th generation, the Blandys have played a central role in preserving and championing the unique traditions of Madeira winemaking.
They produce a full range of Madeira styles—from the drier Sercial and Verdelho to the richer Bual and Malmsey—each aged using the time-honoured canteiro system, where the wines mature slowly in seasoned casks under the warm conditions of the island’s ageing lodges.
Bual is medium rich, like a 30 year old+ Tawny Port, with vanilla, butterscotch, raisin, dried fig and sweet pastry notes.
What the critics say:
"Richly brocaded; liquid toffee-apple. A wine that feels like oil on silk, clinging to every corner of the mouth. Heavy, sensuously, lazily curved drapes of burnt toffee, darkly poached quince, coffee, thick cream. A cinnamon-stick-spiced, allspice-berried, campfire-coal-burn of a wine, resplendent with the fire-lit gleam of jewelled fruit and acidity. Dried figs, bitter chocolate and the wickedly playful, irreverent bzzz of apple sherbet. It fills my throat with a long, ancient, slow-sinuous warmth. Deep scarlet like a fire opal nested in the pearl of your throat, like the lustrous ruby tears of a phoenix."
