Beaune Premier Cru, 'Clos Du Roi', Domaine Robert Ampeau et Fils, 2002

The 2024 releases from Robert Ampeau has given a very rare opportunity to enjoy mature vintages at prices that are practically at the level of recent en primeur releases. As these wines have remained unmoved in the cold cellars at Ampeau since bottling, the conditions for a very slow, undisturbed ageing are perfect, showing impressive vivacity and freshness alongside the obvious mature fruit character.

The Clos du Roi is a vaunted 1er Cru climat in the north of Beaune famed for producing robust, rich wines of longevity not dissimilar to those from Corton. 2002 was dry and warm, with some welcome rain around harvest, producing reds of excellent quality.
