Taking its name from Saint Guido della Gherardesca, an emblematic figure from the 11th century. Tenuta San Guido can be found nestled along the Tyrrhenian coast, between Leghorn and Grosseto, this estate graces Maremma, a region immortalized by Italian Nobel laureate Giosuè Carducci.

In the 1920s, Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta envisioned a wine of utmost distinction, akin to a 'thoroughbred.' Inspired by the aristocracy's affinity for Bordeaux, Sassicaia was born—a name destined for greatness.

The Wine

Tenuta San Guido's vineyards benefit from a unique terroir. The estate's vineyards are nestled between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the rugged hills of the Apennines. The sea breezes temper the summer heat, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly.

The soil, known as "Sassicaia soil," is a mix of stony, mineral-rich earth and clay. These well-draining soils force the vines to dig deep for water and nutrients, resulting in grapes with remarkable concentration and character.

Tenuta San Guido is committed to minimal intervention winemaking. The grapes are hand-harvested at the precise moment of ripeness. Whole berry fermentation is preferred, followed by aging in French oak barrels. This careful approach allows the wines to express the terroir and the character of each vintage fully.

Today, Tenuta San Guido is under the guidance of Nicolo Incisa della Rocchetta, continuing the legacy started by his great-uncle. With a focus on sustainable viticulture and a deep respect for the land, the estate produces wines that are not just profound but also environmentally responsible.
