Argiano is one of the oldest and most beautiful estates in Montalcino (and was one of the members of the original Brunello Consorzio). Although the estate is situated in the south of the region which tends to be several degrees warmer than vineyards to the north, the vineyards achieve good elevation and comprise a high percentage of the mineral-rich marl in their clay limestone soil, also found in the hill of Montosoli – Montalcino’s widely accepted “Grand Cru” site. The vines stretch across the 125ha estate, mingled between olive groves and woods, and produce deep, sultry, hedonic fruit with the assistance of cool Mediterranean air.
We're huge fans of the wines here - easily some of the best value in Montalcino - with the estate Brunello regularly holding its weight against many of Tuscany's most famous names. We weren't surprised to see the 2018 awarded Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 2023! In fact during our Brunello 10 Years On tasting, focussed on the 2013 vintage, the Argiano Brunello was on absolutely cracking form.
The Wine
Argiano has a super range of wines. From their humble, easy-drinking Rosso to the illustrious single vineyard Vigna del Suolo, one of Montalcino's greatest names. The Solengo is also well-worth seeking out as one of the greatest value Supertuscans, formerly supervised by the late Giacomo Tachis (of Sassicaia and San Leonardo fame).
