Giodo is the solo venture of Carlo Ferrini, arguably Italy’s highest profile wine consultant, who works with San Leonardo, Siepi, and Castello di Romitorio, to name a few. All firm favourites of Honest Grapes, it should come as no surprise then that we’ve been thrilled with to see Ferrini put his hat in the ring of Montalcino, nor that the quality is outstanding, especially as over the years he has worked for half a dozen different growers in the region.
Named after his parents Giovanna and Donatello, Ferrini’s 5.5ha of vineyards, which enjoy an elevated position at 300-400m above sea level situated between Sant’Angelo in Colle and Sant’Antimo, are planted with low yielding Sangiovese Grosso clones that produce loose bunches of small, thick-skinned berries – perfect for producing textbook aromas and flavours.
The Wine
The Brunello is farmed from a tiny 2.5ha plot and aged in traditional 500 litre oak casks, as well as large casks up to 2,500 litres to emphasise the fruit character. It’s been on absolutely cracking form since release, regularly receiving scores into the high 90s from Monica Larner & James Suckling.
Make no mistake, this is destined to be one of Montalcino’s future icons, if it hasn’t already claimed that status already!
