The Myburgh family have farmed Meerlust since 1756, and the 1980 Rubicon was among South Africa's first serious Bordeaux-style blends, named after Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon, a point of no return. After a glass in the office, we understand the sentiment.

Atkin writes: "While some Stellenbosch producers struggled in 2023, Meerlust produced another very impressive Rubicon". Greg Sherwood MW, on 96+, calls it "sure to be one of the standout Cape Bordeaux blends of the vintage". This has all the power and drive one expects from a Cape Bordeaux blend, yet in 2023 there is extra freshness and drive, with a mineral edge reminiscent of some of the Pessac-Leognan's most illustrious châteaux.
