Castello di Ama really are on a roll and we make no apologies for offering a third wine from them in as many weeks! We are very pleased to recommend arguably the greatest hidden gem this storied estate has to offer: Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo 2021 which has received its highest-ever score with an epic 99 points from James Suckling.
San Lorenzo is a Gran Selezione, awarded only to a limited number of the very best Riservas across the region. It typically represents the pinnacle of terroir and winemaking at each estate, coming only from estate-grown fruit and requiring a minimum 30 months ageing prior to release.
99-point wines for under £40 a bottle IB are pretty rare beasts and this comes with our highest recommendation. The Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, another fan, says encouragingly that “San Lorenzo is a generous wine, and it is a bottle you can enjoy in the medium or long term”, suggesting a drinking window of 2024-2040 – which means that when we ship later this year you can enjoy a case immediately and keep another one for a decade or two – perhaps taking the latter in magnums?
