There are very few wines in the world where you can trace a direct, unbroken line from a single vineyard to a single family across more than 160 years. Australia finest single vineyard ‘Hill of Grace’ is one of them. The original 'Ancestor' vines were planted around 1860, and Stephen and Prue Henschke have stewarded it since 1979, Prue spending the better part of five decades working vine by vine to restore and sustain the health of the four-hectare plot - the results speak for themselves.
The 2022 releases are exceptional. As Erin Larkin said “it’s a sensational vintage… I love the wines from the 2022 vintage”. The new 2022 ‘Hill of Grace’ has received near perfect scores from the critics, led by Australian critic Ray Jordan, describing it best as “May well be the prettiest Hill of Grace yet released. May also be the best, and that’s saying something”. 2022 also marks 70 years of Mount Edelstone as a consecutively produced single-vineyard wine. When Cyril first released the 1956 vintage at wine shows, it caused a sensation overnight. The 2022 is a worthy successor receiving nearly identical scores from the critics as the aforementioned Hill of Grace while Erin Larkin has called it “one of the most lovely Mount Edelstone Vineyard Shirazes I have tasted on release”.
Lastly there's Keyneton Euphonium, named for the Barossa village where the Henschke winery sits, and for the family brass band founded by Paul Gottard Henschke in 1888. The restored euphonium remains a family heirloom. The wine is less sentimental: a structured, age-worthy Shiraz-led blend that consistently overdelivers at its price point and makes a brilliant entry into the Henschke stable.
