The Chablis arm of the illustrious Albert Bichot portfolio, Domaine Long-Depaquit is one of the region’s most celebrated growers and deservedly so. The wines are consistently excellent from village to Grand Cru, regularly with Chablis’ elite producers, including the likes of Raveneau, yet at prices that are simply ludicrous in the context of Burgundy!
We’ve had the honour of working with Domaine Long-Depaquit for years now, and their wines are always clear favourites with the Club Members and the team. You can find the Chateau in the heart of Chablis and it’s considered to be one of the most beautiful in the area, with a charming rose garden that surrounds the property – if you’re ever in Chablis it is worth the visit to stop and gaze in awe!
In 2014 a more environmentally conscious winery was built, and additionally they made their move to organic farming, leading them to be awarded the highest level of environmental certification in 2019. This decision has proved to be enterprising – vintage after vintage has presented elegant, mineral driven wines. Long Depaquit’s approach includes low yields, minimal intervention and tailored barrel ageing.
The Wine
They boast four Premier Crus and five Grand Crus, namely their Grand Cru La Moutonne, which found its home in a natural amphitheatre where the soil gifts the Chablis with a level of complexity rarely found in any other area of this region. Their Les Vaudésir is another one of their famous Grand Crus. Following the last ice age, the erosion has given the soil here exceptional diversity and the terroir is a perfect match for the maturity the southern facing vineyards lends the grapes.
We’re also huge fans of the Preuses and Bougros, which are always on cracking form and are textbook example of the great wines this region is known for. The village wines and premier crus also offer extremely good value for money – their Les Vaillons 1er Cru for example is a no-brainer for the quality and finesse on offer! The entire portfolio offers so much for Burgundy lovers and should be on everyone’s radar.
