Château Pape Clément stands as a testament to Bordeaux's rich winemaking history, tracing its origins back to the 13th century. One of the oldest Grands Crus of Bordeaux, it boasts a vineyard that witnessed its inaugural harvests in 1252, established by Bertrand de Goth, a scion of a noble Bordeaux family. Rising from Archbishop of Bordeaux to Pope Clément V in 1305, his legacy gave the château its name, etching it into the annals of Bordeaux's winemaking heritage.
Situated in Pessac, Château Pape Clément is a Cru Classé Graves property with a captivating history. Its 32-hectare vineyard, nurtured by Bertrand de Goth (the future Pope Clément V) in 1300, is now owned by Léo Montagne.
The Wine
During the mid-20th century, the estate encountered challenges and experienced a decline in quality due to limited investment. However, in 1985, a new era began under the guidance of Bernard Magrez. He revitalized Pape Clément's winemaking journey by introducing meticulous vineyard selection and innovative practices, including stainless steel vats and an increased usage of new oak barrels. The vineyard landscape showcases Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, as well as a touch of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon, and Muscadelle.
Today, Château Pape Clément proudly presents wines that reflect its storied heritage and unwavering commitment to excellence. Léo Montagne continues the legacy, showcasing the unique terroir and capturing the essence of Bordeaux in each bottle.
With its historical roots and resurgence under Bernard Magrez's stewardship, Château Pape Clément now stands tall as a producer of some of the finest clarets in Pessac-Léognan.
