Third Growth Château Léoville -Barton is a model of a St Julien Bordeaux with typical restraint and elegance. The first of the two Bordeaux wine estates bought by Hugh Barton in the 1820s, it is one of the few chateaux that is still in the hands of the same family that was an owner at the time of the 1855 classification, a rare distinction it shares with its twin brother Langoa-Barton (the eagle-eyed among you may recognise Langoa-Barton above on Leoville's label) & the illustrious Mouton Rothschild.
We’ve had the privilege of hosting owners Lilian & Damien Barton for an epic Wine Therapy Session, and these are favourite wines with the Honest Grapes team, as well as Club Members.
Melanie & Damien Barton are the current proprietors, bringing expertise and passion to uphold the estate's storied heritage. In addition to Léoville Barton, they also oversee the renowned Château Langoa Barton, forming a formidable duo of family-owned properties.
The Wine
At Château Léoville Barton, tradition is the cornerstone of winemaking philosophy. With 2nd growth classification, the wines are known for their classic, harmonious profiles that elegantly reflect the St. Julien terroir. Solid tannins and well-structured wines are hallmarks of the Barton approach, showcasing the estate's dedication to producing age-worthy Bordeaux expressions.
With Anthony Barton at the helm, the estate continues to craft wines that pay homage to their heritage while capturing the essence of the region. Bordeaux’ premier critic Neal Martin’s enthusiasm for the wines is such that he "cannot see any reason not to own a few bottles of this in your cellar".
