A lesser known estate in Montalcino, though one keen to make a name for itself, Cava d’Onice lies just to the east of Montalcino in the Val d’Orcia. Simone and his father Valter Nannetti’s wine journey started with the Colombaio farm in 1995. Then in 2005, Simone and his family established Cava d’Onice, a tribute to a nearby Etruscan onyx quarry. This is very much a family affair and an estate to watch closely!
The Wine
Cava d’Onice make two different Brunelli: the Colombaio is the low production, estate Brunello from the family’s original farm; whilst the Sensis is from the new plot they acquired in 2005. Both are excellent, though very different in style.
