Collection: Two 95-point scores for Viña Real Gran Reserva

A sample of Viña Real’s 2019 Gran Reserva arrived in the office last week. We pulled the cork expecting good Rioja, and got something rather special. By the end of the afternoon, most of the team had put their name down for a case. It’s just been released, and we’d like Club Members to share in the fun, so we’re offering 5% off two or more cases of six.

Viña Real only puts the word “Especial” on its Gran Reserva in remarkable vintages, and the 2019 carries it: Selección Especial. It’s small-production Rioja too, made with real care: just 2,500 cases from a tiny 2019 harvest of small, loose, perfectly healthy bunches. Luis Gutiérrez gives it 95 points, calling it “a textbook Viña Real Gran Reserva” that “feels super harmonious”. James Suckling, also at 95, finds it “pristine and precise ... effortless”.

It’s the kind of Rioja that makes people fall in love with wine. Enjoy a bottle with your Friday night dinner and you’ll understand why connoisseurs revere great Rioja. If you’d like to lay some down, the magnums, double magnums and the 5-litre bottle will age beautifully for years.
