La Rioja Alta, Viña Arana Gran Reserva, 2014
La Rioja Alta, Viña Arana Gran Reserva, 2014
- Red Still
- Tempranillo, Graciano
“Great Rioja, as traditional as it gets, in good quantity and moderate (and often plain great) prices.”
Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocat
The 2014 is La Rioja Alta's second vintage of the outstanding Viña Arana Gran Reserva. With no 904 and 890 release in 2014, only the best fruit was used.
The makeup of the wine has changed from the original Viña Arana, replacing the Mazuelo to the Graciano grape. The Graciano (6%) gives the wine an aromatic intensity and acidity, to carry the structure and elegance of the Tempranillo (94%). This great vintage of Viña Arana Gran Reserva comes from 40 year-old vineyards in Las Cuevas, El Palo and Las Monjas in Rodezno and Montecillo estate in Fuenmayor. The grapes are vinified separately in American oak for 3 years, and racked as few times as possible.
Drinking window: 2021 - 2050
What the critics say:
"Arana commemorates one of La Rioja Alta's historic families. The Tempranillo (95%) and Graciano (5%) are aged separately in American oak barrels for three years before blending, then for three years in bottle (two years less than the 904, and six years less than the 890). The winery's keynote to this Rioja is 'freshness'. I agree.."
"Lots of mushroom and walnut aromas with plum and leather, too. It’s full-bodied, but very soft and creamy-textured with lots of old wood, mushroom and ripe fruit on the finish. Some chocolate and hazelnut. Complex and gorgeous. Drink or hold."
